Frank Butler – Frank is by far one of the best Chinese Medicine practitioners in the country when it comes to trauma and orthopedics. He runs a two year long continuing education series that includes courses in External/Internal herbs for trauma, Advanced Tui Na (medical massage), Chinese Bone Setting, and much more. This series is currently being taught in three states and has been picked up as base curriculum at 3 different Chinese Medicine Universities. He is an accomplished author, with one book out now, and three on the way. He is also the founder of an international aid organization that brings “alternative” healthcare to impoverished areas that may not even have western healthcare, such as the Tsunami zone of Indonesia.
My role with Frank – I have a formal apprenticeship with Frank. This allows me to assist him in his treatments and to have the opportunity to discuss his cases as they come in. This has allowed me to gain significant knowledge in the treatment and understanding of bone misalignments, advanced internal medicine, gait disorders, nutritional disorders, external herbs, and much more. Also, I am being formally groomed to instruct in his system of orthopedic treatment.
Sikung Kong Hoi – Kong Hoi has been a traditional Bone Doctor in Mong Kok, Hong Kong SAR for over 50 years and has only recently begun teaching foreigners (I was the first). He learned both from the incredibly famous Southern Shao Lin Temple (Sil Lum), and from his grandfather who was an Imperial doctor near the end of the Qin dynasty. Although he used to specialize in setting and treating fractures, his practice nowadays focuses on minor bone manipulations (called Bone Setting in Chinese Medicine) and the treatment of unioned fractures or non fracture based injuries where bone misalignments are the primary cause of injury.
My role with SiKung – I have traveled to Hong Kong several times to learn both Kung Fu and traditional bone medicine from SiKung. When there I am simply a student absorbing whatever he chooses to impart. Sometimes this is traditional herbal formulas that treat trauma either internally or externally, sometimes it is bone manipulations, sometimes advanced categorizations of herbs for internal medicine, sometimes its advanced Kung Fu practices for developing internal strength, and so on… Whatever the Old Man teaches, I learn…
Bill Taylor – Bill was the head trainer for Oracle’s Challenge in the 2000 America’s Cup in New Zealand, head trainer for several Olympic teams, head trainer of the San Diego Gulls professional ice hockey team, San Diego Flash pro soccer team, San Diego Spirit professional Women’s soccer team, San Diego Sockers Professional Indoor Soccer team, and much much more. All in all, when I knew Bill he had over 11 championship rings to his name… He was in charge of all injuries for his teams, on field and off, and to this day is one of the best Sports Medicine Trainers I have ever worked with.
My role with Bill – As assistant trainer for the gulls and acting head trainer for the Flash, I assisted Bill and learned everything that I could. This included skills such as acute injury management, chronic injury management, working with muscle imbalances, foot disorders, on ice/field injury management, prognosis of injuries, working with Docs of varying skill, triaging of trauma, etc… I was often in charge of the Flash and/or Gulls at practices and games, especially when Bill was out of town. At these times, I managed all aspects of sports medicine for the teams and reported back to Bill when issues arose.
